Questions and Answers
What kind of bike do I need?
For a Social Ride, any bike in working order is suitable.
This includes recreational bikes, ebikes, hybrids, mountain, road and foldables.
However, you’ll need a road bike to keep pace when you join us on a Road Ride.
What should I bring to a ride?
Essentials:
your bike, in good working condition.
a helmet.
water bottle or hydration pack.
comfortable clothing that doesn’t chafe (anything from gym clothes to activewear to pro cycling kit).
a spare tube that fits your bike and/or a patch kit.
a bit of cash, card or tap payment option on your phone for the coffee stop.
Highly desirable:
sunglasses or other protective eyewear.
sun protection (eg sunscreen, a cap that goes under your helmet).
an emergency snack for longer rides (a few jelly beans, muesli bar, sports gel etc).
basic tool kit, although provided you have your own spare tube, someone on the ride will carry basic tools.
When should I arrive?
Try to arrive at the meeting point 10 minutes before the scheduled start so we can say hi.
There’s a short ride briefing that commences at the scheduled start time.
This gives an overview of the ride to come. We also run through common hand signals that we use to keep us aware of hazards, such as holes, cars, bollards and other obstacles.
Can I join a ride if I’m just visiting Sydney?
Absolutely. We love visiting cyclists.
I’m nervous about my fitness and/or ability level. Can I still come?
We’re sure to have a ride that’s right for you. Get in touch with us to talk about your concerns, and we’ll work something out.
How can I get in touch at the last minute?
If you’re running late for a ride, lost, can’t make it, or have a last minute question, you’re able to message us through the app.
We check the app on the morning of the ride, right up to the start time.
How do I sign up to a Spokes Ride?
Please follow our detailed instructions to install the Team App, and sign up to a ride.
How do Spokes grade their rides?

Medium – means rides more than 45 km to 75 km on varied terrain but not super hilly (hill gradients below 5) or with a pace of 20-25 km
Hard – rides greater than 75 km or with steep hills (gradients more than 5) and with a pace greater than or ~25 km/hr
